This project was an extensive renovation, including additions, to an unimproved split level rancher built in the 1960’s. The house had been largely untouched and while it set on a bluff with beautiful views overlooking the Potomac River, it needed updating. The entire rear of the house was removed and the plan re-configured to direct all spaces and views to the rear and a series of discrete additions were added along that line, including a screen porch pavilion, kitchen addition sheathed in lead-coated copper panels and supporting a wood-paneled second story bedroom addition and at the end, a tall, two-story wood clad addition that acts as a termination for the line of added volumes. Inside the house, new supporting beams are exposed and used to define various spaces and various cabinetry assemblies, including a fireplace surround are added to create a series of focal points within the larger spaces.
