This small house was one of the well-known worker’s houses in NW Washington that were constructed with small floor plans on very small lots. Unfortunately, the small footprint made for a small kitchen that was no longer suited to a couple cooking together rather than the stay-at home mother preparing meals by herself. The kitchen addition is quite small and required a zoning variance since it projected closer to the rear lot line than normally allowed, Due to this but to maximize light, the end wall of the gabled space is completely lit with a sand-blasted glass window that maintains privacy and provides a small bay for a table. The kitchen also opens up with columns into the adjacent dining room and rear entance door area to bring light as far as possible into the middle of the floor plan
