St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church engaged NSA and Taurus Renovation and Construction in a two-phase project. The first phase involved stabilization and repair of the thermal and weatherproof building envelope of the church so that the building could continue being used by the congregation for a period of approximately ten years while the congregation and diocese investigated re-development of the site. NSA coordinated with a structural engineer to examine the wooden structure and beams within the sanctuary which had been water damaged from long-term water leaks around the clerestory windows above. NSA then prepared design options to replace the windows and after discussions, prepared remediation details to reseal the windows. The solution for the windows was cost-effective and limited in scope and allowed the church to continue operations over the ten-year period.
The second phase involved a preliminary feasibility study of a mixed-use redevelopment, including the church proper, community support services and outreach spaces, housing and other church-mission related spaces. NSA provided three site plans and preliminary options for massing and street elevations.
